What are Energy Savings Certificates?
Energy Savings Certificates (ESCs) are a tradable certificate issued for electricity, gas, and other energy savings that result from a technology upgrade or modification. ESCs are created under the New South Wales Government’s Energy Savings Scheme (ESS) and are available only to projects within the state. ESCs are used as a market-based mechanism to increase the implementation of energy efficiency measures, and are able to be created for projects within large industrial sites down all the way down to residential properties.
How to Generate ESCs.
ESCs are generated through energy-efficiency projects that result in measurable savings of electricity, gas, or an alternative eligible energy source. Available for industrial, commercial and residential projects, activities can include:
- modification of existing equipment
- installation of new equipment
- the removal of old, inefficient equipment including:
- Lighting
- Air conditioning
- Water heating
- Refrigeration
One certificate is equal to 1MWh of energy. Once a project is completed an Authorised Certificate Provider (ACP), such as Ecovantage, ensures the project complies with the activity rules and generates the corresponding quantity of certificates.
What Organisations do with ESCs.
Once generated, ESCs act like a share that can be traded to reduce the capital outlay of a project. However, unlike federal carbon credits or renewable energy certificates, they are classified as a ‘white’ certificate. This means that they hold no material carbon or renewable energy value resulting from surrendering them.
Organisations are therefore able to gain the financial benefit of monetising their ESCs, while concurrently claiming the carbon reduction experienced from the upgrade to achieve their climate goals.
Australia’s Most Versatile ACP.
Ecovantage specialises in creating, trading, and supplying all energy certificates, including ESCs. We assist you in balancing the financial and environmental scales for each project.
Ecovantage provides an end-to-end service, from site audits and project management, through to generation and monetisation of the created certificates.
The treatment of certificates is based on the financial and carbon goals of each organisation. The options available are presented with their relevant outcomes on both fronts, to ensure your decision is an informed one. Ecovantage generates and trades certificates as an authorised provider through the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART).
